I am not a parent.
I do not have kids coming into my house.
However, I am turning on the parental controls on my cable box to block SyFy’s new “Outer Space Astronauts.” I can find no other recourse.
I know that SyFy programming outside Friday night shows is…well…targeted at the mentally impaired (Wrestling? Ghost Hunter Academy? Scare Tactics? Imagine Greater, my ass!), but this…show…To be honest, it is so bad that I don’t even want the chance to accidently see it while I am flipping channels. If I accidentally hit SyFy during Ghost Hunters or even WWE, I’ll go, “Damn,” and turn channels. But, I don’t even want to come close to having waste of programing and development dollars entering my consciousness.
I just wish it would block the commercials, too.

Amen! I refuse to watch any of their programming for the whole day just because of few hours of “Wrestling” later on in the evening… Multi-hour blocks of that anime cartoon crap irritates me too. You are dead-on with the rest as well — how can the same guys who brought us kickass original series along the lines of BSG turn around and offer us pure garbage like Ghost Hunters-anything, reviving that braindead Scare Tactics show, etc? I tried giving the “award-winning, critically-acclaimed” Sanctuary a fair shake, but I’m sorry guys… Syfy keeps hyping it as being this terrific “Eco/Green/whatever-Friendly” invention because they have no sets and everything’s done in front of a green screen…unfortunately, it LOOKS like a cheesy green screen high-school video production!
I cringe every time I see an ad or promo for anything labeled *SYFY ORIGINAL MOVIE* too. I mean, just how many horrible, generic, ‘Attack of the GIANT/MUTANT ‘ with lousy CG special-effects and even worse acting and writing can they crank out per month? This Outer Space Astronauts thing really takes the prize for World Class Stupidity though. Did they change the name to SYFY in an attempt to somehow prevent the SCIFI name and reputation from being trashed or something? What’s next “SYFY”…replacing SYFY FRIDAY with 6-hour blocks of that retarded “Jackass” show?!?!?
I have to agree with you on everything except Sanctuary.
I admit the screen work and CGI are a hindrance and started off pretty shaky, but the show was originally a on-line production, and was made that way as an experiment in the medium. It’s popularity helped it make the jump to TV. While I still see a few mistakes–like them walking above the floor on long shots–the production value as improved greatly. And the stories have improved greatly.
Okay, okay, I just took another look and watched some of the more recent episodes, and retract my previous gripes about the show… however, I can now replace it with a new one — I don’t really dig it when they recycle actors from (more or less) recently shutdown/cancelled shows and plop ‘em in their newer, active series. SciFi grabbed whats-his-name from Farscape for SG1, and then a few months later, *poof*, Claudia Black’s added to the main character list..for a while, it was like watching Farscape inside Stargate. SYFY’s barely got Sanctuary rolling along at full-throttle, and they’d already cast two SG1 main chars… I’m hoping they don’t add any more, and I really hope they stop doing crap like that in the future (i.e. kicking this annoying habit, or at the very least, giving recently discontinued more time to be dead before snarfing spare parts/people from them.)
