Geek Strand: Another Exciting Edition of Bits & Bytes

I know you all love my Bits & Bytes segments. I do, too. However, to be honest, I just couldn’t think of anything to write long about, so I am throwing out some of the cool little things that I have seen out into the ether.

Gotham Goes Nuts

The Bat and the Cat are obviously tied up in each others lives in Arkham CityDespite the fact that everyone even slightly aware of the video game market and the dynamic success of Batman: Arkham Asylum has known for months that a sequel was coming (Heck, there has been a teaser trailer out there for most of the year), everybody has gone gaga over the recent and official Time Warner announcement. Of course the big news was the name: Batman: Arkham City.

As the name, and the teaser trailer, hints at, the madness of Arkham has spread beyond the walls of the asylum and escaped into Gotham itself, along with Joker and a host of other cronies.

Teasers and hidden clues abound, but nothing from this spat of hype over the Fall 2011 release is cooler than the awesome Batman and Catwoman images released for the announcement.

The only disappointment is the one-year plus wait for the game. I hope that Rockstar Studios and WB will use that time wisely.

Geeking Out on the Beach

So, where do you get your geek on at the beach? Well, places vary, but if you want to hook up with the geek-like-minded on the strand, you need to head over to MBGeekOut.com. While the site is simple, the group is worth checking out. With interest and professions ranging from real estate to video games, the Geek Out celebrates their diversity with monthly get-togethers ranging from baseball games to trivia nights at area pubs.

So, if you are a geek feeling alone in a sea of frantic tourists and crazy locals, look them up. You can also find them on Twitter and Facebook at #mbgeekout. (Yes, use the “#” when searching Facebook for them, too).

Starcraft II: Wings of Commerce

Just for the record, Blizzard’s Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, the long-awaited (12 years!) sequel to the hit sci-fi strategy game sold 1 million units in 24 hours.

Other game designers should take note of this, because Blizzard produces two of the most successful brands of computer games (Starcraft and Warcraft) and when they release a product, they do it for BOTH computer systems – Windows and Mac – at the SAME TIME.

That’s right. There is no whining about no market for games on Apple computers or that it’s too hard to do both. Blizzard does it, and they are consistently among the top computer game earners every year.

Even porn stars can be geeks (Or: Some Geeks have all the luck)

I play Dungeons & Dragons. That pretty much solidifies my status as a geek. No matter what else I do — paintball, photography, motorcycling — I will still be considered a geek because of my gaming inclinations.

Even porn stars, like Mandy Morbid, can be a Dungeons & Dragons-playing geek.

Even porn stars, like Mandy Morbid, can be a Dungeons & Dragons-playing geek.

And throughout my long history of role-playing, I have to admit there is some truth to the stereotypes. There are plenty of players out there that make a gaming session look like the cast of “Big Bang Theory” meets “Revenge of the Nerds.” However, I have also seen many exceptions to those preconceptions. I have met, and had the luxury to play with, professionals from all walks of life, including people who work for the military/government and do things they don’t like you to talk about. I have met and dated the unicorn-like “hot gamer chick.” I have met writers, civil servants, cops, artists, business owners and folks from all walks of life.

However, I am nowhere near as lucky as this guy Zak, writer of the “Playing D&D with Porn Stars” blog.

Local Events for the Geek Strand

While my column usually takes on the World Wide Web, gadgets or other “global” subjects, I found that there are some great local things happening for the geek-inclined.

Antiques and Collectibles Show @ the Myrtle Beach Mall – Now until July 26. www.shopmyrtlebeachmall.com

While the name of the mall may change, this smorgasbord of collectibles never fails to return. In addition, it never fails to leave my wallet empty.

Spread out through the concourse of the mall are sports card vendors, movie posters sellers, antique booths and, of course, toys and comic books.

Heck, just passing through before going to the movies, I found a collectible Batman pin and two different sets of comics I was missing for my collection, and there is more temptation waiting my paycheck.

If you are a collector, this show might not be one of the largest, but there are some great additions to your collection to be found during this show.

Blackest Night, HeroClix and Marvel vs. Capcom @ Apocalypse Comics (Hwy. 9 in Little River) Now – July 31st. www.apocalypsecomicsonline.com

DC Universe shutters in fear as the Ring of the Black Lanterns powers up!

Of course, for your regular fix of comic book goodness, you have to head out to the end of the world…or at least Apocalypse Comics on Hwy. 9 in Little River. Chad has been a mainstay for the Grand Strand’s comic lovers for several years now, and the next few weeks are packed with geeky goodness!

This Week’s New Comic Book Day (July 15) features the release of the long awaited Blackest Night saga from DC Comics. In the prelude to Blackest Night, we have learned that the Green Lanterns weren’t the only ring-wielding army on the block, with good guys and bad guys lining up on all sides of the color/emotion spectrum.

However, now that Black Lanterns have risen and they are bringing the dead with them. What does that mean? Bad guys and good guys long thought departed (or at least as dead as you can get in a comic book) are coming back to shake the very foundation of the DC universe.

While WhizKidz may have gone out of business, and the official HeroClix league is no more, Apocalypse host tournaments for the superhero-based miniatures strategy game every other week. The next event is scheduled for July 25. Check out the web site for more information, because rules and team requirements change with every event.

Also, a Marvel vs. Capcom video game tournament has been scheduled for the end of the month (July 31st.) Test your button-mashing skills against some the area’s finest. Again, check the web site for more info.

Get iVamped! Get iMobbed!

Got a MySpace page? How about a spot of Facebook?
Are you tired of getting 100 requests to play this game or add that app?
Well, they aren’t going to be stopping any time soon. Moreover, they may be coming to you iPhone and iPod Touch. Although, since the chain letter mindset of MyFace life has been left behind, what you are getting now is some of the best games ported and improved to fit on that iGadget in your pocket.
Zynga.com, the creators of two of the most popular (read addicting) MyFace apps, had recently released iPhone/iPod Touch versions of Vampire and Mafia Wars. And while the game mechanics are similar to the web-based versions, these mini-versions bring some improvements to the presentation and entertainment value.
In both games, you play a single character that collects currency, crewmembers for your posse, weapons, skills and properties. You can perform tasks to earn experience or go out and beat on other players. In fact, this describes about 90 percent of the FacePlace games out there.
The basic difference between the two games is the genre. In Mafia Wars iPhone, you play a gangster fighting his way up the criminal ladder. You can buy Tommy guns, getaway cars and body armor. Invest the money you steal in legitimate properties and business to generate even more income.
In Vampire, you’re a bloodsucker who hunts for more and more blood, which can be used to increase your mystical powers and dominate humans.
In both games, improving your skills and arsenal are important, but increasing your clan/mob size may even be more important. However, since the MySpace/Facebook restriction that limits you to people who are on your friends list, the game is wide open to add new crew members—if you can find them.
In the iPod/iPhone versions, you are assigned a pin number to give out to your friends/fellow iUsers. I am sure that there are networks forming of lists of people wanting to join your mob. I haven’t explored them too much yet, but I did use Twitter.com to broadcast my id number – 7400 7876 20 – to anyone who might want to add me to their team.
While the comments and rival lists have yet to make their way to the iVersions, Zynga has added a very smart interface, sound effects and other tweaks. The iVersions are much faster and more responsive than their MyFace Flash-based counterparts, which immediately endeared them to me.
So, whether you like to bite or fight, you can now add them to your favorite iDevice and take them with you. They do require an Internet connection to play, but that’s why you got an iPhone or iTouch, right?
And don’t forget to add me!
